ODU, a leading supplier of connector systems, has announced that its Expanded Beam Performance (EBP) technology, already available in the AMC Series T military connectors, is now available in the MEDI-SNAP, MINI-SNAP Series K, and both the ODU-MAC Silver-line and White-Line products.
As a non-contact lens technology, Expanded Beam Performance products offer a 'game-changing' interface for fibre-optic systems according to the company, with advantages such as including low attenuation, virtually no cleaning or maintenance requirements and a long service life says ODU.
ODU says the advantages make EBP the ideal solution for applications where maximum reliability and performance are required, with the MEDI-SNAP product being 'ideal' for mobile applications, especially in the medical sector according to the company.
The MEDI-SNAP is used in medical devices such as ReMoD orthosis, an electronic biofeedback device that helps patients with neurological posture problems, with the circular connector ensuring a constant power supply between the system's sensors and electronics. The MEDI-SNAP is also used in the MEDUMAT/MEDUVENT ventilator along with the ODU SPRINGTAC.
The connector is also used in intraoral camera systems, where it serves as the interface between the camera and the imaging software, as well as being used in horse inhalers, where the break-away function connects the humidifying device with the control unit. ODU says that due to the product being made up of 'high-quality plastic', the MEDI-SNAP is up to 75% lighter than comparable products.

With maximum signal quality and low latency, ODU says that its EBP solutions achieve attenuation levels that are even lower than the outstanding values of conventional physical contact (PC) solutions.
The company says that with its EBP solutions, ferrule cleaning is only necessary in the case of extreme soiling. Under normal conditions no maintenance is required according, and the maximum service life can be achieved without a single cleaning cycle. Contactless transmission means no wear on the contact elements, giving at least 50,000 mating cycles says ODU.
With the AMC Series T Expanded Beam Performance, the existing combination consists of EBP technology and a robust circular connector for harsh environments. With its 3-in-1 locking system, non-reflective surface and high resistance to external influences, the AMC Series T has already proven its worth as an EBP solution for military use according to ODU.
ODU says that the MINI-SNAP Series K Expanded Beam Performance, its classic circular metal connector, is characterised by safety and flexibility. With a well-proven push-pull locking system, environmental protection to IP68 and the smallest 12-lens plug on the market according to the company.
The company says that with the ODU-MAC Silver-Line & White-Line EBP module, integration into a modular connector enables the hybrid use of EBP technology with other media such as electrical signals or air and fluids. The interfaces enable automatic or manual docking with a high number of mating cycles.
