Costa Rica medical device industry on the rise

Costa Rica’s medical device industry is being represented by the CR Med Supply consortium at MD&M East this week.

Comprised of 10 medical companies, the CR Med Supply consortium is participating at the show to highlight the ways in which the country’s medical device industry is expanding.

Costa Rica currently has 96 companies that export medical devices, allowing local companies to develop and specialise within the industry. Last year, medical and precision equipment was the most-exported category of goods in Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican delegation is hoping to show how Costa Rica is a county with strong experience in providing manufacturing for medical devices, traceability, validation, process stability, just-in-time deliveries, logistical efficiency, cost-reduction programs, quick responses, and a strong culture of quality and innovation.

The 10 companies are also displaying how they can provide a solution to and supply chain challenges that industrial multi-national companies in Costa Rica are facing. The consortium has also worked alongside the Costa Rican Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer) to help expand the group.

Alvaro Piedra, director of Exports at Procomer, said: “In Costa Rica we have been working to develop the abilities and competitiveness of the companies that supply the manufacturers of medical devices. Our country is very attractive to the multi-national companies in that sector, and we are proud of the advances and commitment to quality that the consortium has demonstrated. Through CR Med Supply, medical device manufacturing companies around the world can access the ample and reliable supply chain that Costa Rica offers to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to meet their needs related to machined parts, injected plastic, adhesive stickers, calibration, automatization, assembly, and packaging.”

The companies participating at MD&M East are Electroplast, Okay Industries, Etipres, Creativa Raal Industrial, and SCM Metrología y Laboratorios. They are supported by Procomer.

Piedra added that participating in this event, the largest of its kind on the east coast of the United States, is a great opportunity for Costa Rican companies because it promotes their valuable products to engineers, buyers, and decision makers from the leading medical device manufacturing companies.
