Nominations open for 2023 Prix Galien UK Awards

The Galien Foundation has announced that nominations for the 2023 Prix Galien UK Awards are now open.

The five award categories, “Best Pharmaceutical Product,” “Best Biotechnology Product,” “Best Medical Technology,”“Best Digital Health Solution” and new this year, “Best Public Sector Innovation,” recognise excellence in life sciences that improve the human condition. Winners will be announced on 11 May at the Natural History Museum in London. 

The award committee will review what was innovative during the product’s scientific development, application, or clinical utility, what was learned for the future of biomedical science from the product’s introduction to the clinic and what impact the product has had on human health. Additional nomination criteria and submissions information is available on the Galien Foundation website. Submissions close on 31 March 2023.

“Best Pharmaceutical Product” and “Best Biotechnology Product”

The Prix Galien UK Award for “Best Pharmaceutical Product” is open to any medicine that has been developed to prevent, cure and/or treat disease that has had a significant, positive impact on improving patient lives. The Prix Galien UK Award for “Best Biotechnology Product” is open to any biologic medicine (i.e., vaccines, ATMPs, recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies) that has had a significant, positive impact on improving patient lives can submit for this category. 

“Best Medical Technology”

The Prix Galien UK Award for “Best Medical Technology” is open to any instrument, apparatus, appliance, software, material or other article (whether used alone or in combination together with any accessories, including software used specifically for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes) that has had a significant, positive impact on improving patient lives.

“Best Digital Health Solution”

The Prix Galien UK Award for the “Best Digital Health Solution” is open to any evidenced-based digital product that has demonstrated a significant, positive impact on improving patient lives.

“Best Public Sector Innovation”

The Prix Galien UK Award for “Best Public Sector Innovation” is open to any innovation that has been wholly, or majority funded and developed by the NHS or not-for-profit organisations. For this prize, nominations will be accepted for innovations that have facilitated and enabled uptake of drugs, devices, and technologies at scale within the NHS that have had an important impact on the health of the population.

Professor Sir Mark Walport, honorary distinguished professor of medicine, Imperial College, and Prix Galien UK Committee chair, said: “I am looking forward to another year of celebrating the best of life sciences innovation in the UK. The Awards Committee will have the pleasure and honour of reviewing submissions from some of the most dedicated companies and organisations providing the broad spectrum of innovative products improving human health recognised by the Prix Galien UK.” 

The Prix Galien UK Awards launched in 1990 and have been awarded to 41 products since inception. Winners are selected by the Prix Galien UK Awards Committee, which is comprised of 14 members who are experts in the field and share a passion for improving health and driving innovation.
