Ibec head of sectors, and director of medtech and engineering Dr Sinead Keogh said: “The global life sciences industry is estimated to be currently worth in excess of $1 trillion dollars. In 2021 alone, $44 billion was raised globally in digital health innovation, twice as much as 2020. Closer to home, the value of European-based healthtech has grown from $8 billion to $41 billion, between 2016 to 2021. In medtech alone, Ireland stands out as one of the top five global hubs with 450 businesses, including nine of the world’s top ten medtech companies. Ireland is the greatest employer of medtech professionals, per capital in Europe with the number employed rising to 45,000 this year. Ireland is the third most competitive country in the Eurozone, with a start-up friendly environment, access to top talent, and is a global gateway for trade. This means we’re well placed to take a greater global lead while fostering a more regionally balanced economy in Ireland with major clusters in Cork, Waterford, Sligo, Limerick, Athlone, Dublin, and Galway where we are hosting Medtech Rising.

“The Irish Medtech Awards celebrate the sector’s success in strategic areas such as innovation, digital health, diversity and representation, collaboration, and sustainability. However, the ultimate goal of the medtech community is to improve patient outcomes, new product areas like digital health, and enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, are already empowering patients as well as improving clinical decision making. We are proud of the role Irish medtech already plays in saving lives, and we believe that with greater coordination led by the Government under a national healthtech strategy we could make a greater impact.”

Enterprise Ireland head of life sciences Garrett Murray commented: “The Irish medtech sector is world renowned, diverse, highly collaborative and integrated. Medtech companies in Ireland have global ambition underpinned by innovation and research excellence. Enterprise Ireland is proud to work with Irish medtech companies to help them start, scale, and create jobs across all the regions of Ireland. The Irish Medtech Awards are a terrific opportunity to celebrate the success of indigenous medtech companies, their research partners, and the wider sector.”

IDA Ireland’s head of medtech Rachel Shelly added: “Ireland is a shining light in the global medtech industry with a long track record of attracting world leading companies and supporting regional economic development. The important role of the sector is highlighted by the outstanding contribution the industry makes in communities all across Ireland in terms of jobs, capital investment and spend with Irish based suppliers. Three quarters of medtech companies are investing in research & development, creating and supplying the next generation of life saving devices to global markets. Medtech Rising will bring us together to acknowledge this sector’s continued success, and IDA are proud to co-host this must-attend event.”
