Portable smart rising seat developed to aid mobility

A portable smart rising seat has been developed which aims to give elderly and disabled individuals more independence.

The SitnStand is a lightweight, portable device which can be used with any type of chair regardless of the environment.

When living with restricted mobility or a health condition, the process of sitting and standing in a controlled and safe manner can be a challenge. Many people rely on the manual assistance of relatives, friends and carers to get in and out of a chair.

For vulnerable individuals who have to stand or sit without help, the risk of falls and injury continues to increase. It represents a significant problem in the UK. According to the NHS, around one in three adults over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall a year, about half of these will have more frequent falls. Falls are the most common cause of injury related deaths in people over the age of 75. Specifically related to sitting and standing, the Research Institute Amsterdam completed a study in a Bavarian nursing home which concluded that 41% of falls were due to unsuccessful chair transfers. This risk affects the ability for people to remain in the community or achieve discharge from care.

SitnStand combines advanced technology, ergonomic mechanisms and air inflation. Its battery powered functionality is simple to operate with a two-button controller and the fabric cushion section is removable and washable. The product can be transported in a carry case and delivers dependable performance for peace of mind.

SitnStand is the culmination of 10 years of committed development in Israel. Co-founder Gal was inspired by personal experience of restricted mobility with his late father and the many requests received from friends. The product has been solely launched in the UK.

He said: "We selected the UK for the worldwide introduction of SitnStand as it is one of the most established mobility markets. Culturally in society there is a strong desire to promote equality despite challenges within public funds and personal budgets. This attitude fit perfectly with the SitnStand idea as it provides a cost-effective solution for independence in any location and re-enablement back into the community.

"Traditionally, electrically operated rise and recline chairs have been chosen to assist with sitting and standing. Nevertheless, they can prove costly and as an extra piece of furniture, only offer a permanent product that is not moveable. SitnStand offers an alternative or complementary choice. Being able to achieve safe standing and sitting whilst visiting family, friends, restaurants, theatres or whilst travelling is a completely new concept. From first-hand experience, I know the life-changing and priceless value that can be gained from independent standing."

The product has been endorsed by occupational therapist and director of The OT Service Kate Sheehan.

Sheehan said: "SitnStand has inspired occupational therapists, as its innovation and design has led to a product that fits well with the ethos of occupational therapy. Due to its portability, it opens up a whole world of activities that clients want to do in their home, community and whilst travelling, therefore promoting health and wellbeing."
