Surgical Holdings highlights sustainability methods at MEDICA

Surgical Holdings is showcasing how distributors can achieve greater sustainability for their customers through repair services for rigid endoscopes and orthopaedic power tools at MEDICA 2023.

As part of its drive to help the hospitals worldwide cut their carbon footprint, Surgical Holdings has introduced a surgical repair and refurbishment service that covers a range of surgical instruments, including rigid endoscopes and orthopaedic power tools.

The service that is available to distribution partners transforms broken, damaged, and worn instruments to an ‘as new’ condition. All repairs are carried out in Surgical Holdings’ workshop facility based in Southend by a team of experienced technicians.

Using the latest optical technology, the company also repairs scopes back to the manufacturer’s specification, with all parts having full traceability, and compliance with regulations. The company also manufactures complicated fibre bundles for endoscopes in-house, using German fibre optic material and stainless-steel tubing.

Global steel waste remains a huge problem in healthcare. Currently, most surgical instruments – made of surgical grade stainless steel – end up in landfill and remain there, causing detrimental impacts to the environment. Research shows that it requires 50% less energy to refurbish a surgical instrument than to replace it.

Dan Coole, managing director of Surgical Holdings: “The circular economy faces a growing interest around the globe – and the significant environment footprint of healthcare continues to present a pressing issue. It is recognised that the majority of discarded surgical instruments and stainless-steel medical waste contain valuable materials that can be reused. This is why it’s so important to us a company to repair surgical instruments correctly making them as new again rather than replacing them. By working with global distributors, we can help hospitals globally reduce their environmental and financial costs.”

Celebrating their 35-year anniversary this year, Surgical Holdings strives for the best possible quality in everything they do, insisting on controlling the quality of every item it manufactures, from the materials used to the procedures it applies to testing.

The company also manufactures complicated fibre bundles for endoscopes in-house, using German fibre optic material. British manufactured Surgical Instrumentation and Sterile Kirschner wires are also on display.

MEDICA 2023 is taking place until 16 November 2023 and throughout the show, Surgical Holdings will be located in the ABHI UK Pavilion in Hall 16 Stand H52-5.
