Ametek sees rise in demand for strip and foil products

Ametek Hamilton Precision Metals, a brand of Ametek Specialty Metal Products, is continuing to see a rise in the worldwide demand for its high-quality titanium strip and foil products for implantable medical devices.

As scientific innovation drives technological innovation, medical devices are advancing to increasingly smaller sizes for improved safety and performance. Innovative metal materials that offer unique properties and characteristics enable this progress.

Hamilton Precision Metals specialises in custom-engineering titanium foil in grades 1, 2, 4 and 9. The strip manufacturer can produce gauges as thin as a few microns for specialty applications of titanium in an implantable device. Creating this titanium foil involves a cold rolling and annealing process that yields advantageous properties for medical device manufacturers.

Advantages include outstanding microstructure characteristics and formability, customised surface finishes to mitigate splitting, excellent corrosion resistance, and weldability to allow for use in hermetically sealed products. These properties translate to improvements in product quality and allow for the manufacture of next-generation implantable devices that are smaller, lighter, and safer. Hamilton Precision Metals offers tight quality controls on materials and processes to deliver consistently reproducible results.

Hamilton Precision Metals develops titanium materials for implantable shields and cases that provide a biocompatible hermetic seal between the enclosed device and the environment of the human body. The shields are used by the largest pacemaker, drug-infusion pump, and electronic implant manufacturers around the world. Other applications include cardiac monitors, neurostimulator implants, and defibrillators.

Matt Lappen, commercial director at AMETEK SMP, said: “Technology is rapidly changing, and medical devices continue to evolve. Our titanium strip and foil products deliver significant advantages for medical device manufacturers and are receiving strong interest from customers around the world. We’re excited to support the accelerating medical technology sector and are proud that our innovative materials play a key role in improving patient care and quality of life.”

Hamilton Precision Metals will exhibit its latest range of medical-grade titanium materials at MD&M West in Anaheim, California from 12 to 14 April 2022 at Booth #1854. As North America's biggest medical device trade show, MD&M West brings together engineers and business leaders to converge on solutions for life-changing medical devices.
