When it comes to product innovation, recent Benvic acquisition Luc & Bel will have a key role at the show and much to offer the in the coming months.
The Modena-based injection moulder prides itself on its work in medical components and has recently developed a solution for safety improvement in medical-fluid connecting devices - as supplied via infusion medicine delivery containers.
Infusion techniques typically try to minimise the risk of infection by setting up good practices in terms of human manipulation. One critical step involves the connectivity between the infusion lines to the medicine container, particularly at the point where the spike pierces the end of the container.
To make this operation safe, Luc & Bel developed and patented a unique solution that secures the connection and reduces the risk of contamination while offering total sterility protection.
The solution consists of a snap off spiking device, for which sterilisation by ETO is managed prior to assembly. A filter with different gauges - 1.2µm and 2µm – then keeps the interface sterilised that will be perforated by the insertion of the spike until the moment of use – and just after the protective cap has been removed.
Prior to use the user will utilise the protective tab; tearing out the protective element and inserting the spike in the seat of the device. This method of use is made easier by the fracture zone on the snap-off body and makes the removal of the cap safe and reliable.
The device also reduces the risks of exposure to contaminating agents thanks to the presence of the membrane. The membrane has a high filtering capacity that guarantees an efficiency of 99.98%. This makes the spike-connecting procedure to the medicine vial even more secure.
This innovation is designed and manufactured at Benvic Medical’s Luc & Bel facility using precision injection moulding technology.
Manufacture is also assisted by fully automated assembly lines. Production includes 100% end-of-line testing and the whole operation is bespoke-engineered, fully housed and operational in Luc & Bel’s ISO Class 8 cleanroom.
This new snap-on safe connector is available in light sensitive modes to manage all types of medicine, including UV sensitive ones.
